Mel on a Llama

I was working on this a couple of days ago for an org requirement. Why isn’t it done by now? Allergies on my hands prevent me from doing the simplest tasks. How sad.

I hope it goes away soon. Just when I finally get my drawing mojo back, I’m handicapped. Oy.

Yes, I’m still having trouble doodling (hence the lack of updates as well.) I think I have my mojo back tonight after thinking over my life goals. Hopefully this time I don’t lose my drive to draw that easily.

Now have a silly doodle of my boyfriend and I’s avatars on a character creation site (you can probably guess easily.)

Behold, my workspace: the kitchen table! Pretty much disables people from eating proper meals whenever I have a plate to do. Lovely. Reference picture, canvas with underpainting, loads of scratch paper, newspaper… check.

Canvas with the sketch copied on. If you’re wondering, those are post-it flags for the grid number system. They’ve just been lying around, and I don’t really use them.

We will later find out that even with a grid system, I will still fudge up like the brilliant genius I am.

That also happens to be the… what the heck do you call those things? The thing my mom uses to read EEG charts on. Now that there’s technology and EEGs are digital, she no longer needs it and has given it to me. Gives me wonderful memories of using it to color those giant coloring books with watercolors when I was a kid. Haphazard attempts at watercolor, yo yo yo.

I was trying to get a dot of yellow paint out of my tube. There was more air in the tube than there was paint, and so this happy disaster happened.

I think it looks like a pretty cool lizard, don’t you think?

Laying the flat colors on first. Those took quiet a number of layers to make sure the underpainting didn’t show.

So why even bother with an underpainting, some may ask? Who knows. Ask my prof. He knows what he’s doing. (I jest.)

The almost final piece without the border. Here you can see I originally meant for there to be two strips of duct tape but my friend told me those looked like a giant pair of lips. Away with them!

And, yes, I fudged up the placement of the eyes and everything, but I think it makes for a pretty trippy work.

I apologize that I don’t have more in-progress shots (such as while doing the face), but acrylics are a mean medium and dry heckuvva fast, so I had to work quickly. I barely took breaks making the face.

To prepare myself for doing the “What I Desire” Super Charity GO! commission, though I realize I should have probably went for a full body thing to practice realism with, huh?

Gotta fix up what goes where, liven up the colors, and smoothen the shading out. I’ve already spent an hour on this without realizing it. Cool. I don’t really do realism portraits often so I guess this is still a good thing to practice.

It’s also my answer to a repeat of a meme. I love that I can do that meme over and over with more people. I’m totally being way hardcore about it. If I’m going to use the meme to practice, I may as well go all the way, darn it!

Ignore that one box is missing. I’ve been moving them around. I’ve only managed to think up two so far. I’m still going to be fixing those thumbnails up. What am I doing? I’m not just taking this up… I’m taking it up in conjunction with the things I already owe people. Two birds with one stone! Ha!

This will work. It will because I will make myself work. Ahahaha.

Done with three different pens. This also counts as my first entry for February Draw Everyday. Cause I said so.

This is a true story.

Just a silly doodly comic I did in class. (I promise I listen!) Me and my two awesome friends and groupmates, Krinkle, and Nadine, in class.

Baby thesis is just one of the many things killing our brain cells right now. We have a painting exhibit coming up in February, plus our entrepreneurial plates to tackle, not to mention two other baby theses in our two other majors. We also have work in another major, but let’s not make this sound even busier than it already is.

Still doing my best not to fall completely behind with drawing more often. I’m gonna try crosshatching this and putting light colors on it for the heck of it.

Quick update from a cafe in school before I launch myself back into schoolwork.

I managed to overwrite the high resolution version of this with a low-res .psd.

Oh well. At least I had only just started. I can still fix this somehow.

Decided to re-do one of my Super Charity GO! commissions. It’s an angle and pose I’m not very used to, but even if it doesn’t turn out the way I was imagining it in my mind, it’ll be good practice.

I borrowed my friend’s tablet for this. Makes me wish I had a portable tablet so I could doodle while stuck in school with my laptop. I get quite a bit done…

I’ve doodled a little bit this week too. Yup. Totally not everyday, but it’s still a step up from when I didn’t do any doodles at all. It’s just a lot of work to scan them in. I’ll try to polish some of them before doing that.
